UC COSMOS
One of the most competitive summer offerings that we help students apply to is the UC COSMOS (California State Summer School for Mathematics and Science) program. Success Koach is here to help students navigate the competitive application process, from crafting compelling essays to selecting the right recommenders. Let us help you take the first step toward a transformative summer experience on a real UC campus!

What is UC COSMOS?
UC COSMOS is an intensive four-week residential summer program for high-achieving STEM students. Open to students in grades 8-12, COSMOS provides opportunities to work alongside renowned faculty and researchers, exploring advanced STEM topics through hands-on, lab-intensive learning. Students apply to a specific program on one of the UC campuses:

...and get the opportunity to work with faculty and facilities on their host campus. The on-campus lifestyle, hands-on research exposure, and close engagement with professors makes COSMOS one of the most sought-after pre-collegiate offerings in the country.

How Selective are COSMOS Admissions?
Admission to UC COSMOS is highly competitive, with thousands of applicants vying for limited spots at five UC campuses; each campus can only host about 160-200 participants. This ultimately means that only about 20% of students are admitted, and roughly half of the cohort has a 4.0 GPA.
With that said, stats aren't everything. A typical COSMOS student typically demonstrates strong STEM performance, extracurricular involvement, and essays that demonstrate ambition for further growth in STEM. At Success Koach, one of the most common mistakes that we've seen is students underestimating the role of their essays and recommendations; with a program this competitive, strong grades alone are not enough to secure admission.

Will COSMOS Get Me into a UC?
One of the most common misconceptions about pre-collegiate programs like COSMOS is that they serve as feeders into the elite colleges; that's simply not the case. While COSMOS doesn’t guarantee admission to a UC, it can significantly enhance a student’s overall college admissions profile. The program provides unparalleled exposure to university-level STEM research, hands-on experience, and mentorship from experts in the field. Success in these arenas will prove invaluable to an application to any school—including, but not limited to, UCs.
UC COSMOS FAQs
We understand that students and parents may have questions about the COSMOS program and application process. Our FAQ section addresses common concerns, such as eligibility requirements, the importance of GPA, choosing the right campus, and what happens after submitting your application. Whether you’re wondering about essay topics or how to prepare for the program, our answers provide clarity and actionable advice to help you feel confident every step of the way
. Yes, UC Cosmos is highly competitive, with a rigorous application process that requires strong academic performance, recommendations, and a well-crafted application. Roughly one in five students are accepted, but of that accepted cohort, over half have a 4.0 GPA. Thus, proper insight into the essay and recommendation process is critical in pushing applicants over the finish line.
Is UC Cosmos hard to get into?
. While the COSMOS program itself doesn't directly guarantee UC admissions, participating in it can strengthen your application by demonstrating academic excellence, research skills, and a commitment to STEM. Participation in such a prestigious program will improve your application to any school; just don't plan on this being your automatic "in" to a UC.
Does UC COSMOS help with UC admissions?
. COSMOS principally looks for students with strong academic performance (especially in STEM fields) and a demonstrated interest in research. What many students fail to consider, however, is that the program receives so many strong candidates that it inherently has to resort to other metrics of success: most notably, more "intangible" metrics like letters of recommendation, personal essays, and extracurricular involvement. At SK, we're well-versed in helping students shine in these critical areas, and our essay prep in particular has helped past SK students earn their COSMOS acceptance letters.
What does COSMOS look for in applicants?
. The COSMOS summer program is open to high school students who are interested in STEM fields. COSMOS is also only open to California residents; students from other states or international students cannot apply.
Who is eligible for the UC COSMOS summer program?
. While there is no strict GPA requirement, successful applicants to the COSMOS program typically have a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Half of the cohort will have a 4.0 GPA; thus, for students with a less-than-perfect GPA, essay and recommendation strategy will prove critical.
What GPA do you need for UC COSMOS?
. The acceptance rate for UC COSMOS hovers around 20%, but acceptance rates vary somewhat by campus. It's worth keeping in mind that the applicant pool is predominantly composed of high-achieving students; half of accepted students will have a 4.0. Thus, while 20% might not sound daunting in the age of elite admissions, this program is highly selective.
What is the acceptance rate for UC COSMOS?
. A cluster in the COSMOS program refers to a specialized course or research track focused on a specific STEM field, such as engineering, computer science, or biology. Each cluster offers students an immersive experience in that discipline, combining lectures, hands-on projects, and research activities. Clusters also differ by campus, so it's worth looking at the offerings across the different COSMOS campuses to make sure that you're applying to the campus that will best fit your academic interests.
What is a cluster in UC COSMOS?
. The COSMOS waitlist works by placing applicants who are not initially accepted in a queue for potential spots. If a selected student declines their offer or if additional spots become available, students on the waitlist may be offered admission based on their position and the program's capacity. As of 2019, 22% of applicants were accepted, as opposed to 7% who were waitlisted.
How does the UC COSMOS waitlist work?
. Typically, popular UCs like UC San Diego and UC Davis tend to receive the most applications. (And thus, are also more difficult to get into.) Less conventionally popular UCs like Irvine and Santa Cruz generally garner less interest, giving you slightly higher odds of acceptance. Students should, however, gauge the specific offerings at each campus and apply according to which campus is the best fit if they want the best odds of admission.
