What's SK up to this summer?
We pride ourselves on getting students into top summer programs and guiding students towards major-specific research opportunities.

Beyond summer application advising, however, we also offer a number of cutting-edge in-house programs that can help students get ahead in specific extracurricular or academic skill areas. SK summer institutes are free for SK students and usually run as bootcamp-style intensives in areas like model UN, mock trial, speech and debate, and more!
Model UN Institute
Our most recent Model UN Institute was a resounding success, thanks to the expertise and dedication of our three exceptional instructors:
-
Sammy Guerrero — former Director General of Harvard Model UN and current first-year at Georgetown Law School
-
Madhurum Bhuvan — award-winning delegate from the California model UN circuit and freshman at UC Berkeley
-
Tessa Conrardy — former director for Harvard Model UN and assistant director for Harvard Model Congress

This program was meant to jumpstart the MUN careers of SK students at all experience levels; thus, the syllabus stripped MUN down to the basics. Students started with lectures on parliamentary procedure and research methods, and ended the 10-day intensive with a full-fledged conference. In a surprise twist, the delegations from Russia and China ended up being among the foremost advocates of an international climate policy resolution!

This kind of dynamic debate and problem-solving is exactly why Success Koach encourages model UN as an extracurricular: MUN offers an opportunity to hone research skills, practice public speaking, and to add tangible awards to your resume heading into the college application process!

Debate Institute
The SK Debate Institute is a two-week intensive program designed to give students the tools that they need to thrive in a competitive speech and debate environment. Running from July 29 to August 10, the Debate Institute will cover everything from parliamentary structure to advanced tactics like counterplans.
Led by instructors Swasti Hiremani and Tessa Conrardy, the program combines skill lectures, interactive in-session drills, and tailored homework assignments to supplement students' learning. Beyond delving into technical topic areas like contentions and refutations, the program also uses drills and practice debates to prime students with practical skills like research techniques and spontaneous argumentation. Throughout the institute, students receive personalized feedback from instructors and have the opportunity to seek out further support at daily program office hours.

The institute will culminate in a multi-day tournament, allowing students to apply their newly acquired skills in a competitive setting. This tournament mimics real-world debate competitions, with topics announced as the event progresses, challenging participants to construct well-structured arguments under time pressure.

Mock Trial Institute
The SK Mock Trial Institute is a one-week intensive program designed to give students the tools they need to excel in a competitive courtroom setting. The Mock Trial Institute covers everything from courtroom procedures to strategies for mock trial staples like cross-examinations and closing arguments.

Led by instructors Sammy Guerrero and Somya Singh, our most recent iteration of the program combined skill lectures, interactive in-session drills, and tailored homework assignments to supplement students' learning. Beyond delving into technical topic areas like evidence handling and witness preparation, the program also used drills and practice trials to prime students with practical skills like legal research techniques and spontaneous argumentation. Throughout the institute, students received personalized feedback from instructors and had the opportunity to seek out further support at program office hours.

This coming year, the institute will also culminate in a mock trial competition, allowing students to apply their newly acquired skills in a realistic mock trial setting.
