We students are way too focused on a STEM education. While the benefits of STEM are awesome and tangible, don't disregard the humanities subjects. those make you whole. Shreya, my older daughter is getting a very complete education at Wellesley college where she is majoring in CS yet 50% of her classes are in Humanities; that's a requirement when you graduate from a liberal arts college. What did you do last summer?

I see this essay question often with the harder to get in type schools. Be careful here as they expect a solid response. Make summers count! They are a great opportunity to take classes at your local community college, volunteer at a personally meaningful nonprofit, or attend a summer program at your target school. Or do something less common like spending 3 months as a full-time volunteer with a state congressperson’s re-election campaign.

Most students have a vague idea about their career path. Any 17-year old who says he knows exactly what he wants is a statistical anomaly. Please use this assignment to get more clarity into your plans. Use the attached document's below to enhance your responses. Make sure you include responses to the following:
  • What would you like to achieve with your life? What are you passionate about?
  • When you think of a career, what kind of work interests you?

Some students are pretty clear where they see life going, while some are on the fringe. For your college apps, you will need to make a call on the major of choice. Invest the time in knowing what career will make you happy. You are better off telling schools one thing and then later changing your mind rather than staying completely open. Schools like decisive students. It's also ok to have more than one major in mind.
Here's a step-by-step guide on how to choose a major:

Career options outside of CS and pre-med :-)

4/21/2021

Often people graduate from college and realize that their major is not something they want to pursue in the form of a career.
There is something to be said for choosing a career that will provide a comfortable income and an opportunity to save aggressively for the expenses you’ll have as you get older, especially after you have retired from your career. There are quite a few careers that are lucrative, so limiting yourself to medicine or computer science— especially at the age of 15— is ill-advised
